This year, all holidays look a bit different. Due to the Covid-19, some events are canceled, others are delayed for the unknown time. When it comes to July 4th, this is one of the greatest days to celebrate America’s independence. And there is no better chance to celebrate this country and its citizens than this year.
Independence Day on July 4th is a day when family and friends are gathering, eating great food, staying outdoor, and playing games. This year, due to social distancing and the Covid-19 crisis some families might not be able to celebrate as before. However, that is definitely not the reason to drop the celebration completely. You can stay home and plan something inexpensive yet fun to do with your family.
How to Celebrate July 4th
Whether you are an adventurist or you like to spend your 4th of July quiet and peaceful with your family, there are many things you can do. From cooking together to making a patriotic playlist – we got you covered.
Make a Patriotic Playlist
There is no celebration without a good playlist, right? So, don’t be lazy and create your own patriotic playlist. You can play it all day long without even leaving your new favorite cotton robe.
These are some of the songs that should definitely take place on that playlist of yours.
- American Boy by Estelle ft. Kanye West
- America the Beautiful by Ray Charles
- Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd
- American by Lana Del Ray
- Party in the U.S.A. by Miley Cyrus
- Born in the U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen
- American Woman by Lenny Kravitz
- Living in America by James Brown
Fun Family Party
There is no other holiday that says more picnic than the 4th of July. You can organize a picnic for your family and in your own backyard! If this idea of picnic sounds like fun, you can also include your neighbors by making a basket swap. Make sure to prepare something and leave it in front of your neighbors’ doors.
You can hold a hot-dog eating contest. This activity is very popular for Independence day and it can include small kids as well.
Joining in Local Celebrations
Like swapping picnic baskets around the neighborhood, you can also join some local celebrations. Make a small party in the garden or backyard, host a potluck, and enjoy with your small group of friends or family.
Make Crafts With the Kids
Since it is Independence Day, you should get crafty with your kids and make some patriotic projects. You can draw with them, deck out your home in red, white, and blue, make stripes and stars crafts. You can also teach your kids how to knit!
Indoor/Outdoor Movie Festival
Just because you are social distancing from your friends, that doesn’t mean you can’t watch a movie together. Browsers like Netflix, HBO, twoseven, and Metastream can enable you to sync videos and even add a group chat or video.
However, if you miss a real movie theater, then you can set up a film screening in your backyard. Make sure to prepare movie classics for Independence Day – 1776, Top Gun, Independence Day, Yankee Doodle Dandy, etc.
Play an American Game, Don’t Just Watch One
While games like baseball, football, basketball are delayed and opening days are still not announced, you can play these games in your backyard. You can even try something more interesting like a balloon fight. Make sure balloons are in the colors of the American flag.
You can also play can toss game or use big beach ball for throw and catch.
At Home Parade
This year there might be slight differences in holiday celebrations. However, some towns might still organize parades for the 4th of July. You can check in your local newspapers or find out if there is any virtual parade going on.
Unfortunately, the National Independence Day Parade has been canceled due to Covid-19. You can still rewatch some old parades on their Youtube channel.
Bake Some Patriotic Desserts
There is no better way to have fun with your family and your kids, then baking together. From hot-dogs to patriotic-inspired cupcakes – you can make everything that you wish, just make sure to add a bit of holiday spirit.
We suggest trying green bean salad with cherry tomatoes, Pavlova cakes with blueberries, strawberries, and white cream, and raspberry mousse. Don’t forget the BBQ though. Prepare tasty and spicy chicken wings tacos, beef, and many other things. You can surprise your dad with this interesting personalized apron that says BBQ king. Include all your family members and kids in preparation and don’t forget -the most important thing is to have fun.
Light up Some Sparklers
There is no 4th of July without sparklers. Even though sparklers remind us on New Year’s Eve as well, they are perfect for Independence Day as well. When BBQ is over and you have finished with all your patriotic games then you can enjoy by lighting up sparklers.
It is a great idea to write the names of your loved ones in the air. It is not so complicated thing to do, while your family and friends will absolutely love it. You can use long exposure on your phone, if you have it, or use an app, specialized for that.
Salute to The Union with Fireworks
For the end of the day, make sure to salute to the union with fireworks. While some cities have canceled their live firework shows, many of them decided to proceed, like Boston or Nashville. Due to Covid-19, some fireworks might be moved online for a virtual experience. You should find out where these shows will take place and enjoy them as much as you enjoy seeing it live.
Summary
As you can see, there are many things you can do on Independence Day, even while maintaining social distance. From family gathering in the backyard, picnic, BBQ, and crafts with kids – these are activities that are typical for July 4th and they can be done amidst Covid-19. Don’t forget to have fun.
